Ancient Ostia Private Tour from Rome

Pompeii gets all the attention, but for an authentic experience of what a Roman town actually looked like in its entirety — streets, apartment blocks, shops, baths, temples, taverns, markets and all — Ostia Antica is arguably the more rewarding site. Rome’s ancient port city, buried by the accumulated silt of the Tiber’s delta and preserved for nearly two millennia, offers an extraordinary walk through Republican and Imperial Rome in a setting that is far less crowded than Pompeii and only 30 minutes from the city centre. Kai Travel’s private Ostia Antica tour is one of the most rewarding half-day experiences in the Rome area.

Ostia Antica: Rome’s Lost Port City

Ostia was founded in the 4th century BC as Rome’s first colony and grew, over the following centuries, into the empire’s most important commercial port. At its peak in the 2nd century AD, Ostia housed a population of up to 100,000 people and served as the transit hub for the grain, marble, oil, wine and luxury goods that fed and furnished the imperial capital. When the harbour at nearby Portus superseded Ostia’s original facilities, the city slowly declined — but the buildings that remained were preserved by the accumulated silt of the Tiber’s delta, creating a time capsule of Roman urban life that Pompeii, for all its drama, cannot fully match.

What You’ll See

Unlike Rome’s ancient monuments — mostly isolated structures in a modern urban context — Ostia Antica is an entire city, and you walk through it rather than around it. The Decumanus Maximus, Ostia’s main street, still runs straight through the site from the Porta Romana to the Forum, with apartment blocks, taverns, warehouses and temples lining it on both sides. Wagon ruts are still visible in the paving stones. Painted election notices still survive on some walls.

Your guide will take you through the site’s key areas: the Baths of Neptune, with their spectacular floor mosaics depicting the god of the sea surrounded by marine creatures; the Theatre, still used for performances in summer; the Square of the Guilds, whose mosaic floors advertise the trade associations of merchants from Alexandria, Carthage, Narbonne and Cagliari; the Mithraeum of the Seven Spheres; and the Capitolium — Ostia’s main temple — whose brick columns still rise to their full height above the Forum.

The Apartment Buildings

What makes Ostia Antica truly unique is the survival of its insulae — the multi-storey apartment blocks that housed the vast majority of Rome’s urban population. In Rome itself, almost nothing of this type survives above ground level; in Ostia, you can walk into ground-floor apartments, see the remains of communal staircases, and understand for the first time what Roman urban housing actually felt like. Your guide will explain the social structure of apartment living in antiquity: who lived on which floor (the wealthy on the lower floors, the poor at the top), how rents were structured, what communal facilities like latrines and fountains were shared. It is the most vivid picture of everyday Roman life available anywhere in the world.

What’s Included

Private transport from Rome, entry tickets to Ostia Antica, a dedicated private guide specialising in Roman archaeology, and flexible scheduling. Duration approximately four to five hours including travel. Morning departures recommended for the best light and to beat the midday heat in summer.

Planning Your Visit

Ostia Antica is best visited in the morning when the light is at its most beautiful on the ancient stone and before the summer heat reaches its afternoon peak. Kai Travel typically schedules Ostia tours with an 8:00 or 8:30am departure from Rome, allowing arrival at the site when it opens and three hours of comfortable exploration before the return journey. The site is large (covering approximately 34 hectares) and much of it is unsheltered; a hat, sunscreen and adequate water are essential for summer visits. The terrain is mostly flat but the paving is ancient and uneven in places — closed-toe, comfortable walking shoes are recommended. The site has a cafe for a mid-tour break and a good on-site museum housing the finest mosaics and sculptures found in the excavations. Combining Ostia Antica with the beaches at nearby Ostia Lido is possible on the same day for visitors who want to add a few hours by the sea to a morning of archaeology.

Book the Ostia Tour

For history enthusiasts who want to go beyond the standard Rome itinerary, Ostia Antica is essential. Book Kai Travel’s private Ostia tour and walk through a complete Roman city as it actually was.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is Ancient Ostia?

Ancient Ostia was the port of Rome, founded in the 4th century BC and abandoned in the early Middle Ages. Unlike Pompeii — destroyed by an eruption — Ostia was preserved by silt from the Tiber. Today it is a complete 34-hectare archaeological site with streets, apartment blocks, baths, temples and taverns virtually intact.

Is Ancient Ostia better than Pompeii?

For those who want to understand what everyday life in the Roman Empire was really like, Ostia offers something Pompeii cannot: the apartment buildings (insulae) where most of the population lived. At Pompeii most of the houses belonged to wealthy families. Ostia shows Rome as it was for everyone.

How far is Ancient Ostia from Rome?

About 25–30 km from the centre of Rome, reachable in 30–40 minutes by car. Kai Travel includes private transport from Rome in the tour price.

How long does the Ancient Ostia tour last?

The site visit lasts 3 hours. With transport to and from Rome, the full tour takes about 4–5 hours. A morning departure is recommended for the best light and to avoid the afternoon heat in summer.
