Rome Catacombs and San Clemente Private Tour
Beneath Rome’s streets, the dead were buried in their millions. The catacombs — underground cemetery complexes carved from the soft volcanic tufa outside Rome’s ancient walls — are one of early Christianity’s most important legacies, and one of the most atmospheric places in Italy. Combined with the extraordinary layered archaeological site of San Clemente, Kai Travel’s private Catacombs and San Clemente tour is the most complete immersion in early Christian Rome available.
The Catacombs: Christianity’s Underground World
The catacombs were dug from the 2nd century AD onwards as underground burial spaces for Rome’s early Christian and Jewish communities. Roman law prohibited burial within the city walls, so Christians excavated a series of tunnels and chambers in the volcanic rock outside — eventually creating a network of passages that, if laid end to end, would stretch for hundreds of kilometres under the Roman countryside.
The most accessible and historically significant catacombs are those on the Via Appia Antica — the Appian Way, one of Rome’s ancient consular roads whose paving stones still bear the ruts of ancient carts. The Catacombs of San Callisto, San Sebastiano and Domitilla together contain the remains of several early popes and hundreds of thousands of ordinary Christians. Your guide will lead you through the tunnels, explaining the burial practices, the development of Christian iconography on the tomb walls — the fish (ichthys) symbol, the dove, the chi-rho monogram, the Good Shepherd — and the role the catacombs played in early Christian community, worship and the veneration of martyrs.
The atmosphere underground is extraordinary: cool, still, dimly lit, the walls honeycombed with the rectangular niches (loculi) where bodies were sealed behind terracotta tiles, each marked with a painted name or symbol. Your guide creates a human connection to these spaces that transforms them from archaeological curiosities into places of genuine emotional resonance.
San Clemente: Three Levels of History
After the catacombs, your tour moves to the Basilica of San Clemente near the Colosseum — one of Rome’s most remarkable layered sites. The 12th-century church at street level is itself exceptional: beautiful medieval apse mosaics, a schola cantorum (a raised choir platform) that predates most Western religious music, and frescoes depicting the life of St. Clement in a narrative style that anticipates Giotto by a full century. Descend one level and you enter the 4th-century basilica that preceded it — the wall frescoes fragmentarily intact, including scenes from the life of St. Clement and a remarkable sequence depicting a miracle performed with the assistance of a sceptical husband who doesn’t believe his blind wife has been cured.
Descend again, down to Rome’s original street level, and you reach the 1st-century Roman buildings below: a private house, a large commercial building, and the Mithraeum — the underground cult room where followers of Mithras held their secret rituals. The sound of an ancient underground stream accompanies you here — water that has been flowing beneath Rome since before the city existed, still draining as it always has into the Cloaca Maxima, the ancient sewer that was the engineering marvel of its age.
What’s Included
Entry tickets to the catacombs and to San Clemente (including underground levels), a dedicated private guide specialising in early Christian Rome and Roman archaeology, and flexible routing. Duration approximately three hours. Groups of any size accommodated.
Practical Information
The catacombs are located on the Via Appia Antica outside Rome’s ancient walls — reachable by taxi, the Archeobus, or a short walk from the Colli Albani metro station. Kai Travel can arrange private transport from central Rome as part of the tour logistics. The underground passages of the catacombs are cool (a constant 15°C year-round) and dimly lit; a light layer is recommended regardless of the external temperature, and comfortable, closed-toe shoes are essential on the uneven stone surfaces. The San Clemente visit follows the catacombs and is located in central Rome near the Colosseum, requiring a short transit between the two sites. The full tour typically runs three hours including travel between sites. Both the catacombs and San Clemente are closed on certain religious holidays; Kai Travel will confirm any closures relevant to your tour date at the time of booking.

You’ll see frescoes that have survived since the 8th century and learn about the early church and the martyrs depicted on the walls. You’ll hear why so many churches in Rome were built on top of Pagan temples. You’ll learn all about the mysterious cult of Mithras in the eerie temple beneath, and see the surviving altarpiece of Mithras and the Bull. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What are the catacombs of Rome?
The catacombs are underground burial complexes dug into the volcanic tufa outside the walls of Rome, from the 2nd century AD onwards. They were used mainly by the Christian and Jewish communities to bury their dead. Today they are one of the most important sites of early Christianity and a uniquely atmospheric experience.
Are the catacombs suitable for children?
Yes, with a few precautions. Children find the catacombs very atmospheric and the guide adapts the storytelling to the group’s age. We advise parents to consider how younger children might react to the images of tombs and skeletons that appear in some sections.
What is the difference between the Catacombs of San Domitilla and those of San Pietro e Marcellino
San Domitilla contains some of the finest and best-preserved early Christian frescoes, including one of the oldest known images of Christ as the Good Shepherd. It also has an intact underground basilica dedicated to the martyrs Nereus and Achilleus. San Pietro e Marcellino is particularly renowned for its exceptional fresco cycle, considered among the most beautiful in all the Roman catacombs. The paintings are vivid, well-preserved, and rich in symbolic imagery — the Chi-Rho symbol, orant figures, biblical scenes, and banquet scenes (refrigerium). Kai Travel selects the most suitable site according to availability and the group’s interests.
How long does the catacombs + San Clemente tour last?
The full tour with both sites lasts 3 hours, including the transfer from the Appian Way to the historic centre for San Clemente.
