Rome's Jewish Ghetto and Trastevere Private Tour

Two of Rome’s oldest and most characterful neighbourhoods lie just ten minutes’ walk apart, separated by the Tiber but connected by centuries of history. The Jewish Ghetto and Trastevere — one a testimony to the oldest Jewish community in Western Europe, the other a labyrinth of medieval streets that feels like Rome before the tourists arrived — are the most rewarding areas of the city for anyone willing to slow down, look carefully and listen to a guide who knows their stories.

The Jewish Ghetto: 2,200 Years of History

Rome’s Jewish community is the oldest in Western Europe, established in the 2nd century BC when Jewish ambassadors first arrived from Judea to negotiate an alliance with the Roman Republic. For over 400 years, Jews lived in Rome as a protected community with the right to practise their religion — a status that distinguished Rome from many other ancient cities. The neighbourhood that became the Ghetto in 1555 — when Pope Paul IV enclosed Rome’s Jews behind walls and restricted their movement, trade and property rights — had been a Jewish residential area long before, and has remained one ever since.

Your guide will walk you through the narrow streets of the Ghetto, explaining the neighbourhood’s complex history: the centuries of papal restriction, the moments of relative tolerance under more sympathetic popes, the destruction of the community’s ancient synagogue by the Inquisition, and the building of the current Great Synagogue in 1904 — a building whose Egyptian Revival architecture deliberately evoked the exile in Egypt as a statement of cultural identity. The deportation of over 1,000 Roman Jews to Auschwitz in October 1943 — just two kilometres from Vatican City, while negotiations between the Nazis and the papacy were ongoing — is addressed by your guide with the seriousness and care it deserves.

The neighbourhood is also home to one of Rome’s great archaeological overlaps: the Portico d’Ottavia, a 2nd-century BC Roman portico built by Augustus and dedicated to his sister, whose ruins now frame the entrance to the area. The medieval church of Sant’Angelo in Pescheria sits directly within the ancient portico, its walls incorporating Roman columns — a physical embodiment of the layered history that defines the Ghetto.

Trastevere: The Soul of Old Rome

Cross the Tiber into Trastevere — literally “across the Tiber” — and the character of Rome changes immediately. The streets narrow, the buildings close in, ivy covers the brickwork, and the pace slows. This was Rome’s working-class neighbourhood for centuries, home to artisans, fishermen, sailors and tradespeople, and it retains a texture that the more tourist-heavy centre has largely lost.

Your guide will lead you through Trastevere’s finest spaces: the Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere, whose 12th-century apse mosaics are among the most beautiful in Rome and whose 4th-century foundation makes it one of the oldest churches in the city. The small piazza that gives the neighbourhood its social centre — with its central fountain, its outdoor cafes and its evening crowds of local families — is the most authentically Roman public space in the city. And the less-visited Bramante Tempietto in the courtyard of San Pietro in Montorio — a tiny but perfect early Renaissance circular temple that Michelangelo cited as an architectural ideal — is one of Rome’s best-kept secrets.

What’s Included

A dedicated private guide, entry to relevant sites, and flexible pacing. Duration approximately three hours. An excellent choice for food lovers — your guide can recommend Trastevere’s best restaurants and market stalls for lunch or dinner after the tour.

Planning Your Visit

The Jewish Ghetto and Trastevere tour is at its most atmospheric in the morning, when the Ghetto’s vegetable market is active and Trastevere is still quiet before the lunchtime crowds arrive. Evening tours (available on request from April through October) offer a different but equally compelling atmosphere: the Ghetto is peaceful in the early evening, and Trastevere comes alive at night with a genuinely local social scene around the Piazza Santa Maria square that tourists who stick to the historic centre rarely discover. This tour pairs naturally with a meal in Trastevere — one of the best dining neighbourhoods in Rome for traditional Roman cooking — and Kai Travel’s guides can provide excellent, current restaurant recommendations at every price point. The tour involves no entry tickets (the most significant interiors are experienced from outside or with free entry) and is ideal as an afternoon or evening programme following a morning at the Colosseum or Vatican.

 Tour itinerary

Jewish Ghetto

One of the biggest and most breathtaking monuments you'll come across while walking in the Jewish Ghetto of Rome is the majestic ruins of Octavia’s Porticus. Constructed two thousand years ago under the order of Augustus, in honor of his sister Octavia, was a monumental marble area surrounded by columns and embellished by two temples dedicated to Juno and Jupiter. The frescos that are still visible today were realized centuries later, showing us how this area was continuously used over the centuries.

Tiber island

Tiber Island (Isola Tiberina) is a small, boat-shaped island in the middle of the Tiber River in Rome. It’s one of the city’s most unique and historic spots, rich in ancient legends and traditions. During our tour you can cross the oldest surviving Roman bridge, built in 62 B.C.

trastevere

Trastevere is famous for its maze of winding alleyways lined with charming, ochre-colored buildings, each one unique with its worn facades, wooden shutters, and overflowing flower boxes. Its main square, Piazza di Santa Maria in Trastevere, is a lively gathering place dominated by the stunning Basilica di Santa Maria in Trastevere, one of Rome's oldest churches.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Why visit Rome’s Jewish Ghetto?

Rome’s Jewish community is the oldest in Western Europe, founded in the 2nd century BC. The Ghetto district preserves 2,200 years of unbroken history, with the Great Synagogue of 1904, the remains of the Roman Portico of Octavia and the traces of the 1943 deportations. It is one of the most authentic and moving places in Rome.

Does the tour include the inside of the Synagogue?

The visit takes place mainly outdoors and through the streets of the district. Entry to the Synagogue and the Jewish Museum can be added on request (separate ticket). The guide provides all the history and context even without the indoor entry.

Is Trastevere far from the Jewish Ghetto?

No, they are about 10 minutes’ walk apart across the Garibaldi Bridge over the Tiber. The tour takes place entirely on foot between the two districts, linked by the riverside walk.

When is the best time to do this tour?

The morning is ideal for the Ghetto (busy market, Trastevere still quiet). The afternoon/evening is perfect for those who want to end the tour with dinner in Trastevere — one of the best districts in Rome for traditional Roman cuisine.
