Pitti Palace and Boboli Gardens Private Tour Florence
On the south bank of the Arno, the Pitti Palace and its extraordinary Boboli Gardens form one of Florence’s greatest cultural and natural complexes. The vast palace that the Medici Grand Dukes transformed into their principal residence in the 1540s today contains five separate museums, while the Boboli Gardens stretching behind it — a masterpiece of Italian formal garden design spread across a hillside — is one of the most beautiful green spaces in Italy. Kai Travel’s private tour gives you the highlights of both with expert specialist guidance.
The Palatine Gallery
The jewel of the Pitti Palace is the Palatine Gallery: a suite of grand ceremonial apartments decorated with elaborately frescoed mythological ceilings and hung with one of the greatest collections of Renaissance and Baroque painting in Italy. Unlike the Uffizi, which presents its collection in clean, well-lit galleries using a chronological and academic display system, the Palatine Gallery preserves the 17th-century hanging system in which paintings were grouped by decorative harmony rather than historical sequence — creating an experience that is more like walking through a magnificent private palace than visiting a museum, which is exactly what the space was.
The collection includes around 500 paintings, with extraordinary concentrations of work by Raphael — including the Madonna della Seggiola, one of his most beloved compositions, and the Portrait of a Gentleman — Titian, Rubens, Van Dyck, Fra Bartolommeo and Andrea del Sarto. Your guide will navigate the collection with intelligent curation, ensuring you spend maximum time in front of the works that matter most and understand them in their historical context.
The Royal Apartments
Adjacent to the Palatine Gallery, the Royal Apartments preserve the palace’s interior decoration as it appeared in the 19th century when the Savoy royal family used it as their Florentine residence following Italian unification. The heavy drapery, the elaborate gilded furniture, the walls hung with dynastic portraits and the proliferation of bibelots characteristic of late 19th-century aristocratic taste create a vivid portrait of a very different kind of grandeur from the Renaissance spaces next door.
The Boboli Gardens
Behind the Pitti Palace, the Boboli Gardens climb the Bobolicino hill in a series of terraces, avenues, grottos, fountains and open-air theatrical spaces that were designed by Niccolò Tribolo in the 1550s and expanded over the following two centuries by a series of major landscape designers and sculptors. The Amphitheatre immediately behind the palace — where the first operas were ever performed in the 1590s, in a genre invented essentially to fill this space — the Oceanus Fountain by Giambologna, the Viottolone (a long cypress-lined alley descending to the Annalena exit), and the Porcelain Museum pavilion at the top of the hill are among the garden’s many highlights.
The view from the top of the Boboli Gardens — across the terracotta rooftops of Florence to Brunelleschi’s dome and the mountains beyond — is one of the finest views in Tuscany and worth the climb alone.
What’s Included
Entry tickets to the Palatine Gallery and Boboli Gardens, a dedicated private guide with expertise in Medici history and Italian Renaissance and Baroque art, and flexible pacing. Duration approximately three hours. Comfortable walking shoes recommended for the garden terraces.
Practical Notes
The Pitti Palace is closed on Mondays. On all other days, Kai Travel can book morning or afternoon entry with skip-the-line access. The Boboli Gardens are best enjoyed in the morning when the light in the lower terraces is richest, or in the late afternoon when the hilltop views are most dramatic. The gardens cover a large area and involve a significant uphill walk on the main Cypress Alley to reach the upper terraces and the panoramic viewpoint; comfortable walking shoes are strongly recommended, and the climb is worth every step for the view. In summer, the gardens provide considerably more shade than the palace interior, making them a pleasant complement to the gallery visit. Kai Travel’s guide can sequence the Palatine Gallery and garden visits in the order that best suits your group’s energy and interests on the day.

The Kai Travel tour includes the Palatine Gallery — with around 500 paintings including 11 Raphaels and works by Titian, Rubens and Caravaggio — and the Royal Apartments, preserved in the 19th-century furnishings of the House of Savoy. The Boboli Gardens complete the visit with 4.5 hectares of historic gardens.
Do the Boboli Gardens involve a lot of walking?
The gardens extend over a hill with a height difference of around 30 metres. The main route includes a climb up the Cypress Lane to the panoramic terrace. Comfortable shoes are recommended; the climb is gradual but requires moderate fitness.
Is the Pitti Palace open every day?
The Pitti Palace is closed on Mondays. The Boboli Gardens follow variable seasonal opening hours. Kai Travel always checks the opening times for your tour date.
Is there a panoramic view of Florence from the Boboli Gardens?
Yes — it is one of the most beautiful views of Florence. From the upper terrace of the gardens you see the whole city with Brunelleschi’s dome, the surrounding hills and the terracotta rooftops stretching to the horizon. It is worth the climb on its own.
