Private Colosseum, Roman Forum & Palatine Hill Tour
Rome’s ancient core covers just a few square kilometres, but within that compact area lie the most important ruins in the Western world. The Colosseum, the Roman Forum, and Palatine Hill together form a single archaeological complex that represents over 1,000 years of Roman civilisation — from the city’s mythological origins to the fall of the Western Empire. Kai Travel’s private Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill tour is the most complete way to experience all three sites in a single, expertly guided visit.
Three Sites, One Extraordinary Experience
Most visitors to Rome see the Colosseum and dip briefly into the Forum before moving on, rarely making it up to Palatine Hill. That’s a genuine missed opportunity. The hill towering above the Forum is where Rome was supposedly founded by Romulus, where Augustus and successive emperors built their palaces, and where you can stand above the entire Forum and look out over the landscape that shaped Western civilisation. Adding Palatine Hill to your itinerary transforms a good tour into a genuinely complete one.
Your tour begins at the Colosseum, where a licensed specialist guide will walk you through its construction, its history as an arena for gladiatorial combat and public spectacle, and its remarkable state of preservation nearly two millennia after it was built. You’ll learn about the social structure of ancient Rome through the lens of the games — who watched from which tier, what political messages emperors encoded in the spectacles, and how gladiators actually trained and lived.
From the Colosseum, your guide leads you past the Arch of Constantine — a monument to the emperor who Christianised the Roman Empire — and into the Roman Forum. Once the political and religious centre of the ancient world, the Forum today is a landscape of columns, temple platforms, triumphal arches and paving stones worn smooth by two thousand years of footsteps. Your guide will reconstruct the Forum in its prime, explaining each monument in the context of Roman history and daily life. The Via Sacra — Rome’s oldest street — runs through the Forum, and your guide will walk you along it with the same narrative the ancient triumphal processions once followed: from the Arch of Titus at the top of the hill down to the Temple of Saturn at the far end.
The Hidden Gem: Palatine Hill
Palatine Hill is the most underrated part of the entire archaeological complex. Rising above the Forum, it offers sweeping panoramic views over the ruins below and across to the Circus Maximus, where chariot races once drew crowds of 250,000 spectators. The hill is also home to the ruins of imperial palaces — including the Domus Augustana and the Domus Flavia — and some of the oldest archaeological remains in Rome, including a hut believed to date to the city’s earliest settlement in the 9th century BC.
On Palatine Hill, away from the main tourist flow, your guide can take the storytelling deeper: the myths of Romulus and Remus, the Lupercal cave where the she-wolf supposedly suckled Rome’s founders, the transformation of Rome from a small hilltop village to the capital of a Mediterranean empire, and the extraordinary luxury of imperial palace life at its height. The frescoes preserved in the House of Augustus — including a room painted entirely in trompe l’oeil architectural perspectives — are among the finest examples of Roman wall painting in existence.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is the difference between the tour with the Palatine and the one without?
The tour with the Palatine includes a visit to the hill where Rome was founded, with the remains of the imperial palaces and a panoramic view over the Roman Forum and the Circus Maximus. It is the most complete tour of the archaeological site and the one we recommend for first-time visitors to Rome.
How long does the Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine tour last?
The tour lasts 3.5 hours. The Palatine Hill adds around 45 minutes compared with the basic tour, but it is well worth the extra time for the views and the remains of the imperial palaces.
Is there a lot of walking? Is the route suitable for everyone?
The route involves about 3–4 km of walking on uneven ground, including the climb up the Palatine. Comfortable clothing with closed shoes is recommended. The Palatine areas are not wheelchair accessible.
Is the Palatine ticket included in the price?
Yes. The combined Colosseum + Roman Forum + Palatine ticket is included in the tour price. Kai Travel handles all the ticketing logistics, including priority access.
