St. Mark’s Basilica Private Tour with Pala d’Oro & Loggia dei Cavalli

For visitors who want to experience St. Mark’s Basilica at its fullest depth — beyond the standard visit to the main floor — Kai Travel’s enhanced private tour includes access to the Pala d’Oro, the extraordinary jewelled golden altarpiece behind the high altar, and the Loggia dei Cavalli, the upper-level terrace above the main facade where the famous bronze horses stand. These two additions transform a great tour into an extraordinary one, giving you access to areas that require separate tickets and specialist guidance to appreciate fully.

St. Mark’s Basilica: An Introduction

Built to receive the relics of St. Mark the Evangelist, smuggled from Alexandria in 828 AD and housed in successive basilicas on this site, the current building dates substantially from the 11th century but was embellished continuously for the following 500 years. The result is a building without parallel in Western Europe: Byzantine in its spatial organisation and decorative vocabulary, but distinctly Venetian in the way it absorbed and displayed the trophies and treasures of a maritime empire. The 8,000 square metres of gold mosaic covering walls, vaults and domes create an interior that shimmers and shifts with the light, creating a deliberately mystical atmosphere that was precisely calculated by its medieval patrons.

Your guide will lead you through the main floor of the basilica with the systematic depth that the mosaics and their theological programmes deserve. The 13th-century cycle in the narthex — depicting the Creation, Noah and the Flood, Abraham and Moses — is one of the finest examples of Byzantine narrative art in existence. The central dome’s Ascension and the crossing dome’s Pentecost complete a theological programme of great sophistication and beauty.

The Pala d’Oro: A Masterwork of Byzantine Craftsmanship

The Pala d’Oro — literally the “golden altar panel” — is the liturgical altarpiece of St. Mark’s and one of the most valuable objects in Italy. Begun in Constantinople in 976 AD and expanded over the following four centuries, it consists of 250 cloisonné enamel panels set in a golden frame decorated with more than 1,900 gems: emeralds, rubies, sapphires, amethysts and pearls of Byzantine and locally Venetian manufacture.

The subjects of the enamel panels range from the life of St. Mark to the life of Christ, from the ranks of archangels to the Apostles and the Four Evangelists. Your guide will lead you through the iconographic programme systematically, explaining Byzantine artistic conventions — the gold ground representing divine light, the hieratic frontal figures, the use of colour and gesture to denote spiritual hierarchy — and placing the altarpiece in the context of Venice’s extraordinary 500-year relationship with Constantinople as trading partner, cultural borrower and, ultimately, conqueror.

The Loggia dei Cavalli and the Bronze Horses

Above the main facade, four bronze horses stand on the upper loggia — the most famous ancient sculptures in the world after the Laocoön. What you see outside are high-quality replicas; the originals, moved indoors to protect them from atmospheric pollution, are displayed in the Horses Museum on the loggia level. Your tour includes both: the originals in their glass-enclosed room, and the loggia terrace where the replicas stand, with its extraordinary view over St. Mark’s Square.

The horses’ history is one of the most remarkable stories of art and power in antiquity. Cast in the 4th century BC — exactly where and by whom remains debated — they were displayed for centuries in Constantinople’s Hippodrome before being looted by Venetian crusaders in 1204 and installed above St. Mark’s. Napoleon took them to Paris in 1797 as symbols of his own imperial ambitions; they were returned to Venice after his final defeat at Waterloo. Their 2,400-year journey across the Mediterranean world, from Greece or Rome to Constantinople to Venice to Paris and back to Venice, is one of history’s most compelling stories of art, empire and resilience.

From the loggia, the view over St. Mark’s Square is one of the finest in Venice — the perfect perspective from which your guide will explain the deliberate theatrical design of the square, conceived as a stage set for the self-presentation of the Venetian Republic to the world.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is the Pala d’Oro?

The Pala d’Oro is the main altarpiece of St. Mark’s Basilica, one of the most precious works of art in the world. Made in Constantinople from 976 AD and expanded over four centuries, it is composed of 250 cloisonné enamels on a gold ground, framed by over 1,900 gems including emeralds, rubies, sapphires, amethysts and pearls.

What are the Horses of St. Mark and where are the originals?

The four bronze Horses of St. Mark are sculptures from the 4th century BC — the most famous ancient bronzes in the world after the Laocoön. They were looted from Constantinople during the Fourth Crusade of 1204, brought to Venice and placed on the facade of the Basilica. Napoleon moved them to Paris in 1797; they returned to Venice after Waterloo. The originals are now displayed in the Loggia museum (included in this tour); high-quality copies stand on the facade.

What can you see from the Loggia dei Cavalli?

The Loggia dei Cavalli is the upper terrace of St. Mark’s Basilica, looking straight out over St. Mark’s Square. It is one of the most beautiful viewpoints in Venice: the square from above, the domes of the Basilica, the Lagoon in the distance — a perspective that very few visitors get to enjoy.

Does this tour also include the Doge’s Palace?

No. This tour focuses in depth on the Basilica alone: main floor, Pala d’Oro and Loggia dei Cavalli. For the combined Basilica + Doge’s Palace tour, see the dedicated tour page.
