Underground Rome Private Tour
Beneath the streets of Rome lies another city entirely: a layered underground world of ancient temples, early Christian spaces, medieval construction and archaeological mystery. Kai Travel’s Underground Rome tour takes you below street level into some of the city’s most atmospheric and least visited spaces, guided privately by an expert who knows the hidden stories of what lies beneath the surface.
Rome’s Hidden Layers
Rome is famously built on top of itself. As successive civilisations built over earlier ones — each new structure rising on the foundations of the last — the city accumulated vertical depth as well as horizontal spread. Today, the street level of ancient Rome lies between three and ten metres below modern ground level, and many of the city’s most remarkable ancient and early Christian spaces are preserved in this underground zone, accessible only with specialist knowledge and the right permissions.
Your underground Rome tour typically includes visits to multi-layered archaeological sites where you can literally walk down through time: from a medieval church to an early Christian place of worship to a Roman insula or temple beneath it. The Basilica of San Clemente exemplifies this perfectly: the 12th-century church at street level sits above a 4th-century basilica, which in turn sits above a 1st-century Roman building that includes a Mithraeum — a cult room dedicated to the mystery religion of Mithras.
The Mithraeum
The Mithraeum at San Clemente is one of the most atmospheric ancient spaces in Rome. Mithraism was a mystery religion popular among Roman soldiers in the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD, practised in underground cult rooms whose low ceilings, narrow benches and ritual imagery created an intense, intimate experience of initiation and brotherhood. The carved relief of Mithras slaying the bull — the tauroctony — still stands at the end of the room, lit now as it was in antiquity by flickering light that gives the scene a dramatic quality the ancient worshippers would have recognised.
Your guide will explain Mithraism in depth: its origins in Persian religious tradition, its adaptation in the Roman world, its attraction for soldiers and merchants, and its eventual decline as Christianity came to dominate the empire. The relationship between Mithraic and early Christian practice — the shared imagery of light, redemption and communal meals — is one of the most interesting and contested questions in the history of religion.
Other Underground Sites
Depending on the tour configuration, your underground Rome experience also include the Case Romane beneath the Celio hill — the excavated living quarters of a wealthy 2nd-century Roman family, their walls still bearing frescoes.
The underground tour can also be extended to include the hypogeum of the Colosseum (with the relevant access tickets), combining Rome’s most famous underground space with its less-visited but equally atmospheric counterparts.
What’s Included
Entry tickets to all underground sites visited, a dedicated private guide with specialist expertise in Roman archaeology and early Christian history, and flexible routing based on your interests. Duration approximately three hours. Groups of any size accommodated.
What to Know Before You Go
Underground sites in Rome require advance booking and are available only through operators holding the relevant access permissions. Availability is genuinely limited — the underground levels of San Clemente, the Case Romane and popular tour times sell out well in advance. Kai Travel handles all ticket logistics as part of your booking. The underground sites are cool year-round, with temperatures typically around 15°C regardless of the season — a welcome relief in summer but worth noting in winter. Sturdy, closed-toe shoes are recommended as some underground surfaces are uneven or damp. Photography is permitted in most underground areas. The tour is not recommended for visitors with severe claustrophobia; some passages are narrow and low-ceilinged, though none require crawling.

Tour itinerary
san clemente basilica
The Basilica of San Clemente in Rome is a remarkable site, known for its unique architectural structure that spans multiple historical layers, reflecting nearly 2,000 years of Roman history. Located near the Colosseum, San Clemente is one of the best examples of Rome’s stratified history, with a 12th-century basilica built over a 4th-century Christian church, which itself was constructed atop a 1st-century Roman building complex. In our tour we can explore this multilayered history, descending through the centuries.
Caelian Hill
The Caelian Hill is one of the seven hills on which ancient Rome was founded. Though often overshadowed by its more famous counterparts like the Palatine or Capitoline Hills, the Caelian Hill is steeped in history and has been home to a range of important religious, political, and residential buildings over the centuries.
Roman Houses on the Celio Hill
The Roman Houses on the Celio Hill (Case Romane del Celio) are an extraordinary archaeological site located beneath the Basilica of Santi Giovanni e Paolo on Rome's Celio Hill. These houses provide a rare glimpse into ancient Roman domestic life, showcasing a complex of well-preserved residences from different periods, complete with stunning frescoes and architectural features.
