Private Walking Tour of Florence

Florence is one of the most walkable cities in Europe — compact, beautiful, and extraordinarily dense with history, art and architecture at every turn. A private walking tour with Kai Travel is the ideal introduction to the city: no buses, no crowds of strangers, just you and your group with an expert guide who loves Florence and knows its every corner. In three hours on foot, you’ll cover the essential Florence and discover the details that most visitors walk past without noticing.

The Florence Story

Florence’s dominance of European culture during the 15th and 16th centuries was not accidental. The city was home to the Medici — the banking dynasty whose extraordinary wealth and cultural ambition sponsored Brunelleschi, Donatello, Ghiberti, Botticelli, Leonardo, Michelangelo and dozens of others. Understanding Florence means understanding the Medici, and your guide will tell their story — rise through banking, consolidation of political power, extraordinary patronage of the arts, exile, triumphant return, and ultimate decline — against the backdrop of the physical city they transformed from a prosperous but unremarkable medieval commune into the cultural capital of the Western world.

The Historic Centre: Duomo and Surroundings

Your tour begins at the Piazza del Duomo, where Brunelleschi’s extraordinary dome — the largest masonry dome ever built, constructed between 1420 and 1436 without the use of a fixed wooden framework, using a revolutionary double-shell technique that Brunelleschi invented specifically for the purpose — dominates the Florentine skyline with a beauty that still astonishes. Your guide will explain how Brunelleschi solved the engineering problem that had defeated architects for decades, winning the commission by demonstrating he could build a dome without centring, and what the dome’s construction meant for the development of Renaissance architecture and the idea of individual genius.

The Baptistery’s bronze doors — particularly Lorenzo Ghiberti’s East Doors, which Michelangelo reportedly called the “Gates of Paradise” — represent the first great sculptural achievement of the Florentine Renaissance. Your guide will explain the competition that produced them, the technical innovation Ghiberti introduced, and why these gilded narrative panels, depicting scenes from the Old Testament, changed the course of European sculpture.

Piazza della Signoria and the Uffizi

From the Duomo, you’ll walk to the Piazza della Signoria — Florence’s civic centre, dominated by the severe Palazzo Vecchio and its extraordinary open-air sculpture collection. The Loggia dei Lanzi, a three-arched open arcade, holds several of the most important sculptures in Florence: Benvenuto Cellini’s Perseus with the Head of Medusa and Giambologna’s Rape of the Sabine Women are among them. Your guide will explain the political significance of the sculptures positioned in this public space — a deliberate statement of Medici power and Florentine artistic supremacy.

The Oltrarno

A great Florence walking tour crosses the Arno. The Oltrarno neighbourhood retains a character that the increasingly tourist-heavy north bank is losing: artisan workshops, small neighbourhood churches, and the Piazza Santo Spirito — a square that feels like a genuinely lived-in place rather than a stage set for tourists.

What’s Included

A dedicated private walking guide, flexible routing based on your interests, and approximately three hours of Florence at its best. External visits (no entry tickets required); Uffizi, Accademia or Duomo interior visits available as add-ons.

Practical Information

Florence’s historic centre is compact and almost entirely pedestrianised within the main tourist zone, making it ideal for walking. The tour involves approximately three kilometres of walking at a leisurely pace, with frequent stops for explanation and photography. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended; Florence’s streets are largely smooth but include some uneven stone surfaces in the oldest areas. The tour can be adapted based on your group’s interests — if Renaissance architecture is your primary focus, the route weights the Duomo, Baptistery and Orsanmichele more heavily; if art history is the priority, the Piazza della Signoria and Uffizi exterior tour takes precedence. Kai Travel also offers extended versions of the Florence walking tour that include interior visits to the Uffizi Gallery, the Accademia (home to Michelangelo’s David), or the interior of Brunelleschi’s dome — any of these can be added as a supplement to the standard walking tour itinerary.
