Colosseum Arena Floor vs Underground: What’s the Difference?
The arena floor is the reconstructed platform at the level where gladiators fought. The underground — the hypogeum — is the network of tunnels and chambers directly beneath it. They are two separate restricted areas of the Colosseum, and neither is included in a standard Colosseum ticket. Each requires a special access ticket and an authorised guide.
The Arena Floor
The arena floor is the wooden platform that once covered the Colosseum’s underground passages. It was recreated in 2023, allowing visitors with the correct access tickets to walk onto it for the first time in centuries.
Standing on it, you see the amphitheatre the way the gladiators saw it: the tiers rising around you on every side, the emperor’s box at eye level across the oval. Most visitors experience the Colosseum from those tiers, looking down into the exposed hypogeum and imagining the floor. On the arena floor you are inside the picture rather than above it.
The Underground (Hypogeum)
Beneath the arena floor lies the hypogeum, built by Emperor Domitian in the late 1st century AD to replace the original earthen arena floor with a far more sophisticated infrastructure. It is a labyrinth of tunnels, chambers, lifts and corridors — the machinery that made Roman spectacle possible.
This is where gladiators and animals waited in the dark before being raised into the arena above. It is the least understood and most atmospheric space in the monument, and it is where a guide matters most: without one, the hypogeum is a set of brick corridors.

Which One Should You Choose?
If you can only do one, choose by what you want to feel. The arena floor is the emotional moment, the spot where the fighting happened and the view everyone recognises. The underground is the explanatory one: it answers how eighty thousand spectators were entertained and where the animals and gladiators came from.
Travelling with children often tips the decision toward the arena floor, which delivers immediately. Visitors who have already seen the Colosseum once tend to prefer the underground.
